Excellent presentations posted, lots of effort to achieve this.  It is clear how the product has been constructed and the decisions made.  I like the way in which you have recognised the conventions of the CD digipak and have worked with these in mind.  I would have liked a few more comments on the design and constructed meaning and how this would have appealed to the intended audience.  Well Done.  Can you embed the presentations rather than use links?

I like the Cd digipak and the product design which fits well with your music video shoot.  You are clearly in command of the process of construction, evident by using screengrabs. I also like the slideshow you produce through Google documents - very informative and understanding of CD conventions.  This could have been embedded in the post, rather than using a url link, it would improve the presentation on the blog.
Your evaluation of the digipak is very concise - you do not appear to have followed the advice that was given on how to evaluate this product, which has led to some descriptive work.  Can you please re-edit these posts as soon as possible

Digipak draft update

Ian added more colour to the design, it is still uncompleted but the theame is finnished. All that is left is replaceing the band members.

Digipack draft

This is a draft of the digipack. This will not be the final one as we are currently replaceing the cast. I t converges well with the poster to keep a reconasiable style and theame which the audience can connect to.

This was make on adobe photoshop by coping images from the internet. This is a picture of the back panel. And screen shots of the bar code and production company emblem so that the digipaki can fit the conventions set by the industry.

Lanmou poster draft

The Poster is a draft of what our poster will look like it will not be the final one as the cast has not yet been finalalized thanks to people agrreing to do the shoot but recantly pulling out for varius reasons. We hope to finalize the cast tomorrow as our shoot is at the end of next week.

Account of Shoot Day.

My groups shoot day was on the 18th of November 2011. During the shoot day we had to set up the schools production studio, then film the music video and then clean up for the next production team that were coming the next day.

After school on the 17th we set up as much of the set as we could in order to save time on our shoot day. We stayed on after at school to about 9 o’clock. In our set we initially placed a raised floor for the bases of the living room which we were trying to create. We wanted it raised so that we could use lighting effects around the side of the room for when the electric feel comes. We then put up the walls using large bits of ply wood and clamps. We decided in preproduction that we wanted our room to have some more shape so we produced an arc window. This made the room seem more believable and added character. We then wallpapered the wall; this was probably the most tedious part of the preparation as it did take some time. We then laid the carpet on the floor. This created the basic living room. We worked efficiently in order to create what we had previous wanted. The preparation we made that evening became very valuable the next day when we could quickly start filming, only having to arrange the furniture, the band and any additional lighting that was necessary.

Once we had finished setting up, we went to the dance studio to get the dancers who were starring in our video ready. They rehearsed a 30-second dance that they were all happy with and we made sure that this fitted the theme of our video and once we were all pleased with it, we got them ready with their costumes and make-up. We then went to find our other cast members and got them ready too. We got our band set up and asked them to play through the song a few times, mainly so they could get used to their instruments but also so they could be comfortable playing with each other and to tire them out a little so they looked more natural when we started shooting. We got our two main characters in costume and painted our main girl with UV paint so she could satisfactorily signify the ‘Electric Girl’, standing out from the rest of the cast. We started shooting just about on schedule which was a positive thing as it showed everything had gone as planned.

We started shooting at about 10 o’clock. We all had a go at being on the camera, directing and doing the playback, swapping around at certain intervals so we could all have a say in the different roles working towards our piece. We started off shooting the party scene, which we used for setting the scene and introducing our audience to the party. This allowed us to get shots of our two main characters in the normal situation of the party and we could therefore introduce the connection using the editing and post-production. Due to the fact that we had previously worked out which shots we wanted, we had organization on the day. This also gave us a chance to shoot any ideas we thought about on the day once we had got the definite shots, leading to more experimental shots we were key in the final product.

Admittedly, we encountered some pressure of time as the dancers were only available until lunch; therefore we had to get all of this section of the video done before then. We also had to get a lot of the party section done before lunch too as the dancers were a big part of our narrative and it would have looked empty without them. So this is another reason why we got shots of the party first and once we had finished this we could get everything ready to shoot the dancers in the dark with the UV paint theme. This included painting the dancers completely in UV and making sure the rest of our cast had at least some of the paint too so everything looked in place. We had previously ordered UV jewelry as well as UV contact lenses which were worn by our male protagonist. This paint made the party look more interesting and therefore showed this change in the song due to the change of set, make up and costume.  This created the juxtaposition we had hoped for between the first and second section of our video.

We knew we would have no problems with the UV paint as luckily we had previously tested the paint out on all of our cast members the day before for health and safety issues – making sure there were no allergic reactions. This also gave us a chance to make sure it fitted the scene and looked exactly how we wanted it. Therefore, this let us be perfectionists about the costumes in our music video, and it turned out exactly how we wanted it on the day.

So to start shooting our second part of our video we started with shots of the dancers. We got them on set and tried out different shots we wanted. We could all have a bit to say about what we wanted due to the fact we had a screen on set which we had attached a lead from the camera to the screen. Therefore, whatever was happening on the camera could be seen by the rest of the group on the big screen. This gave us a good idea of how the final product would look as not all of us could crowd round the camera at once. The lighting was very key in this part of the video. We had switched on lights around the side of our set and we had included a couple of extra lights which spun around as well as projections of patterns on the walls. The most important light however was the UV light which highlighted the paint on our dancers making the shot look very nice. After doing a couple of shots we decided the lights on the side were too much for the shot and so we turned them off and find a much better outcome. Once we knew that the lighting was right, we then played around with the aperture of the camera in order to lighten the image and bring out the features of our dancers as well as the UV paint. We started off with a wide shot of all the dancers and followed this with a close up of each dancer and a couple of experimental shots, letting the camera slide throughout the dancers as they performed their routine.

After this, all that was left was to shoot the performance element. We did the first half of the narrative and found it to be very successful, getting shots of each band member and in good time too. We then did the ‘electric feel’ half, where again we changed the lighting and tried more experimental and interesting shots to depict the excitement and the juxtaposition during the video. After we had all the shots we had planned and hoped for of the band, we then had a chance to film any other shots we wanted of the party as we realized it would be a positive thing having as many shots as possible as we did not want to come short when it came to editing.

Preperation update for shoot

We have nine days untill to our video shoot. In this time we hope to finalize costumes for our cast and aquire some of the remaining props. We should be able to get the majority of this from the school as they have a large selection of costumes from prevouse performing arts productions. We should be able to order the remaining props off the internet. We are also currentcly designing our digipak covers and poster covers.

This is an example of what our poster could look like. This is unlikely to be the final one as it does not fit the theame of the digipak design. I produced this on photoshop by useing pictures I have found on the internet.

Excellent understanding of CD digipak conventions and of layout and design.  Consdier further, how has this  research helped inform your design for a CD digipak that is being used?  Perhap's add a couple of slides to your presentation to explain this?

This is concise work - there is some basic  clear accounts of your planning and research for your music video production day after half term.
I like the way in which decision making is evident along with reflection and revisions, but this is somewhat descriptive rather than analytical at times, for example in discussion of Mise en scene and lighting which are important concepts in terms of the look that you want to promote.

Your cast list has been agreed and you need to be working on the set design and organisation of production. You need to recognise work that other's have completed in your group and identify what you have done - do this with individual evaluation.

Also try not to simply keep posting single images onto blog - use an online tool which helps display the images such as Flickr  Please make sure that you share resources but not evaluation work - which should be an individual effort.

Media Studies - Copyright permission for track

One of the requirements of the Advanced Production unit is that you seek permission for use of any music from the copyright holder (you'll be pleased to hear that seeking permission is all you need - you don't need to receive permission!)

You will need to identify the contact details of your track's copyright holders, which will probably be the record label, and send the relevant person a copy of the following email (with individual details filled out):

Copy for permissions email:

To (name of record label/contact at record label)

We are a group of A Level students working on an A Level project for a qualification in Media Studies. We are writing to request permission to use the following track as part of this project:

Name of track and artist

With your permission the track would be used as the accompaniment to a short form video that is made purely for assessment purposes and will have no commercial usage. The video will be viewed only by members of the school community and the assessor of the examination board.

The artist and the copyright holder will of course be fully recognised in the pre-production and evaluation material that accompanies the project. We can also include a full copyright notice if required both in the planning material and on the video itself.

Yours sincerely

Evaluation of animatic

A storyboard is a graphical representation of the camera shots in a film sequence which are connected together to create a 'narrative flow' A storyboard serves the same function in film making as an outline does in written projects. It enables the film director to visualise the flow of camera shots. Once a paper storey board is produced the director and director of photography can decide how the shots will be filmed and used.

Since we have produced our animatic we can really see how the storey bored will flow and therefore how the production will look. This means we can construct the understanding of the performance and all members of the group can see the same thing instead of individual thoughts. You can see the links made between the narrative and the star image as the star image is young and partiers and the narrative is a party which they are performing at so visual it links up very well.

We could have developed it by producing more storey bored frames there fore producing a more detailed and better flow to the animatic. The digital technology used in producing the animatic is very important because eit shows a very good structural flow to the storey bored with the music which shows a strong indication to the crew what the director wants.

The animatic helps with planning because we as the crew can see the impracticalities of the production or any props that we need as we can see a visual representational the set and characters.

Set Design

This is the set design Ian in my group has pallaned it is of a fairley usual standard liveing room. This has a rased platform but we are now reconsidering this. It also conatins lighting ideas on the side.

Lighting desighn feeback

Today we dissucesd the lighting plan for our set. We talked about the paracticallity of our set and how the lights would effect it. We wre adived to use a mixture of lighting technequies and style throughout. This should be fairley efficant as we are shooting the entire productionj in a single studio.

For the first section we are planning to use naturlistic lighting relative to a familly sitting room. This would be standard house lighting for example lamps.

Later on in the video as the production moves on so does the lighting and the mood moves into a more exsiting and less naturalist feel.

This is a strobe light. It will create a more party atmospher. This can be fairley risky to use as videos must be screaned for strobe warning as it can send certaain people into fits.

Thease are UV lights, thease can be used to exspose Uv paint.

We also also considering useing back lighting behind the set walls and create slits or wholes to create an abstract lighting effect.

Cast list

This is the Cast list we submitted to our teacher. Who will choose who we will get tackeing into condiaration are reasoningings for each cast member.

Main Guy - Tom Simpson, Jack Barton, Ed Nightingale,
• Singer/Guitarist - Tom Barnet, Jack Barton, Bobby
• Ê»Electric Girlʼ - Jess Adam, Ella,
• Bass/Background Singer - Tom Barnet
• Synth/Drums - Philip,
Dancers
• Bethany
• + 4 more

Crowd - Whoever is in PS or wants a bit role on the day.

Reasons for casting
Ed: Even though he is an A2 student, from past experience we know that he can act and
would fit the role exactly. From seeing him in drama productions last year, we know that he
can act well. Also he very much fits the look of the character that our group had in mind.

Ella: Was our second choice for the 'Electric Girl', and we chose her in the end because
our first choice looked to similar to the main character we were casting and we need
contrast between the two. She also does drama, which is why we chose her over our first
choice.

Philip: We chose him as the synth and drum machine player for the band, as he DJ's
professionally at home in Germany, this meens it would look after more realistic and natural. And will have benefits in trying too shoot him as he will know what he is doing. He also looks suitably 'indie' and
from a performance back at the boarding house, we know that he will look fine on camera.
Our other cast members have not been solidly decided, but we have the following
down as prospectives:

Tom B: Can play both bass and guitar to an acceptable standard, and is an option for
either the guitar or bass player. He can also sing, and has had much praise from his music
teachers. At the moment our only proposition for a bass player

Bobby: Is an incredible singer and guitar player, and has a quite mysterious look about
him. He would fit the desired image of the bandʼs frontman perfectly. He is our first choice
for the frontman, but we still need to ask him.

Jack: Does theatre, can act well and can sing acceptably. He is our backup man in case
the above two are unavailable for some reason.

Tom S: Our backup in case for some reason Ed is unavailable or taken ill on the shoot day.
Jess: Initially our first choice as the 'Electric girl', she has become our backup as her facial
features are too similar to Ed's, and in case Ella is missing on shoot day

Your response is sound and you have been creative with your blogs, I particularly like the use of layout and design.  You have a sound knowledge and understanding of who you want your artist to be signed to; perhaps you could link this further by stressing the advantages that your artist has signed to the particular record label.  Your clearly identify your target audience and have profiled them - this coul;d be linked to VALS.  Good research into CD covers and you have a wide range of examples, and this would be developed further if you can link the real product to how it will influence your own designs, by annotating the design.

Digipak covers research

These are the digipak covers of other similar artist with the same alternative image. These varies from Radio to Foals. You can see the similarity between them are that don't feature the artist on the front and are usually quite random. This makes that the artist seem more interested in there music and talent rather then there image they are giving off.

I took a lot of influence from these to produce two ideas for my artist. I took influence because these are various respected musicians who have all received commercial or critical success. This means they give a good idea of what artist will be influenced by. As you can see theres limited reprentaion and foreced star image but that in its self produces a star image of a unique band that is not pushing towards mainstream music and not comerical sucsess but critical sucsee to there fans. This is why there band or artists is not in any of the examples of the influence above that is why I have not included them below.

Below is the digipak template I found on the internet.

My artist

The record company my artist is attached to is EMI.  "EMI Music provides EMI’s roster of artists – as well as independent labels and artists – with a global menu of commercial services and seamless access to an expanding range of revenue streams and business models, including digital and physical distribution, sales, press and promotion, marketing, licensing, synch, brand partnerships, live recordings and merchandising."
- The website

This Record company is a global company so will have reach to to the USA and across Europe but they also accommodate to less mainstream and more niche market artists. Our artist does not completely appeal to the mainstream audience nor is it completely niche. That is why I think EMI will be good for our artist because of there slightly alternative look and sound. They also specialize in British music and seeing as our artist are British it would make a good fit.

There range accommodates artists from rap (snoop dog) to metal(Iron maiden) to pop(Katy Perry)

Target audience-
15-25 years old
Male and femail
Would probely appeal to B,C,D social class
(B- middle manegment, C-supervisory,skilled manual, D-Semi and unskilled mannual)
Tend to have a risk takeing life style
Trendies(Crave attention from peers)
Innovators(Wish to make ther mark)]#
Rebels(Remake the world in their own image)
groupies(Just want to be accepted)

This is a concise and creative blog - the creativity and design is good.
You have produced some concise work with your blog entries.  In order to develop the detail to your work you need to revise your class notes and add some detail to the comments you make, for example, look at the work on Dyer and Stars, Negus and the video as a promotional tool.  The detail in your written work will heklp  you reach a high notional grade for your research and planning - the concept is clearly there!

Proposition of the artist

Name. Lanmou (meaning loved one in creole, this was thought of to portray the alternative modern hippy type persona )

Genre. Alternative rock

Star image. Counter mainstream, alternative, original, organic

Target audience. 16-30 year olds, men and woman

This is a example of the type of branding the artist would have. Ian make this in photoshop by coping a background of the mgmt website, where fans post there own ideas/graphics in which the band should have and editing over it with the band name. As you can see below it very alternatively styled and gives off the image of the artist we would like to produce.

An Idea of what the album artwork could look like

This is a link to a mood board that Niko made on the star image. https://docs.google.com/present/edit?id=0AcuvPz7iPH4JZGZwM3EzanRfMTY4eHJidzVoZA&hl=en_US&pli=1

This is a link to a powerpoint which Nico produced but in more detail to what i have given. https://docs.google.com/present/edit?id=0AcuvPz7iPH4JZGZwM3EzanRfMTJkc3hzbTZmMg&hl=en_US&pli=1

Initial ideas

Firstly my group and I looked at the resivour dogs opening scene as a concept or look for the video. We liked this as a concept because we agreed that we could produce some nice shots and produce a good narrative. As well as being able to flow freely with a variety of music styles.
]

We then looked at a variety of different genres of music that would work with this style of feel to the video. We decided to look for some think alternative where the artist breaks convention at steps out of modern mainstream music.  These are some of  the songs that we looked at in our research
After browsing through our itunes we decided on 'electric feel' by MGMT.

Lyrics of electric feel.

Lyrics | MGMT lyrics - Electric Feel lyrics

Eletric feel original video.

Initially we struggled to think of a narrative for the video brainstorming ideas of the several men dressed in suits in pursuit of the artist, or the men in suits robbing a jewelry store(intertextual reference to resivour dogs)

  • band of horses- dilly
  • bliss n' esso- sea is rising
  • wax tailor arrange of videos
  • guns and roses
  • MGMT

We also looked at the shots and post productiobn used in a video promoting enviromental enrgy on the isle of wight.

Eco-Island Promo from Evo Films on Vimeo.

Research into real artists of a similar type

MGMT according to there wikipedia is an alternative rock band. . MGMT have a fairly unique style of music and star image or persona. So it is quite hard to find artists with the same look. We did research artist that may have had a different style of music but counter mainstream media conventions like MGMT do.

Radiohead offical website print screen

Above are examples of radioheads music videos. They are usually fairly abstract and not desperately try to portray a star image. The second video especially show how they do not need or what to share the same sort of promotion for them selfs that most mainstream artists do. They do this by one simple stationary shot of just the front man of the group.

In our research I did find a band with a similar style of music called ou est le swimming pool.
This os there video from there most popular song.

This music video solely feautres the artist. With no narrative just the artist performance, highlighting music talent rather star image.

Introduction to Advanced Portfolio

This is a copy of the breif for this portfolio we were given by our teacher.

A2 Media –Advanced Production (G324)

The Brief

1. A promotion package for the release of an album, to include a music promo video, together with two of the following three options:

a website homepage for the band;

a cover for its release as part of a digipak (CD/DVD package);

a magazine advertisement for the digipak (CD/DVD package).

All material for all tasks to be produced by the candidates with the exception of acknowledged non-original sound or image material used in a limited way in video/radio work. Further guidance will be available in the support materials. For music video, permission should be sought from the artist for use of the audio track.

The centre will be expected to allocate marks according to four levels for each of three categories:
Research and Planning

Construction

Evaluation

In arriving at a level for each category, teachers are advised to look for evidence of ‘best fit’. It is possible both for a candidate to be placed in different levels for each of the three categories and to receive quite different marks from other members of the same group responsible for producing an artefact, according to his/her contribution. Teachers are asked to support marks with written comments under the three categories on the assessment sheet

Evaluation of preliem

For our prelim tasked we were asked to plan, shoot and edit a music video for a band called Acres of Life. We had thirty minutes to shoot about a minute of footage.

In the music video we tried to use a variety of different shots. The shots we used and why are:

Wide Shot.  This shot allowed us to shoot the hole band in one shot, it also gave us a establishing shot which was easy always to and from. This also show the band as a unit or team which makes them look good working together.

Mid Shot of band members. Having mid shots of the individual people allowed the audience to connect with each member individually instead of the usual unit a band is show in. This allows the band to seem more divese evan if they are all representing the same look or style, they can still individually build fan bases.

Close ups. We also used close ups of each of the respected band mebers skill or talen in the group. For example a extreme close up on the leed singer mouth and the microphone or the gutirist fingers struming the giutier. Thsi showed the skill of band as oposed to being a mainstream "boy band' who usaully just sing. This shows that the band are a more organic group make them more populer in there target niche audience.

High angle drummer shot. We used this shot because it was a differnt way to show the drummer playing on all the differnt drums and symbols.

I was happy with the shots we filmed on the day and I think in post-production editing my group and I got them to flow well together. I think our most interesting shot was the high angle on the drummer as it offers some contrast to the other styles of shot we were using

Acres of Life are the band we shot are preliem video are an alternative punk indie. Before planning the video we reserched the band and there genre of music. This helped us see what sort of style of music we should shoot and what sort of shots we should use.

Narrative analysis

In class we have been studing media theorists and theorys. For example Tzvetan Todorov. Todorov reinforces Aristle's original theory that everthing has to have a begining, a middle and an end. But in more detail.

This is a diagram of Tordov theory which I found whilst reserching on the internet. This shows and explains narrative.

We also looked at how Bordwell and Thompson in 1991 defined comman media terms.

"Plot- What we can see on screen. Includes extra narrative things
Story- All that we know about the narrative including seen and unseen
Diegesis- The total world of the story
Parallelism- Parrallel development of mul;tiple nstorylines
Cause and effect- causes can come formk a character"

Music Video analysis

In Class we have studied the music video of Brittney Spears 'hit me bay'. Britney Speras is a well known pop star who appeals to a wide audience. Her star image works on two levels. The first being a incocent younge girl wich appeals to the younger generation as it is more relateable. This younger generation also tends to be attracted to music with catchy upbeat songs which Britney regulary records. The second level is being aimed at a more mature male audience who are likely to be attracted to Brittney and to her suggestive lyrics in her songs aswell as her videos.

This is the video of hit me baby.

In The above screen shot of Brittney in the video you can see the svhool girl relateabl image. It is very innocent and not suggest if in any way. This attracts the younger generation (mainley girls) to britneys music

This screenshot from the same video shows contrast between the two projected star images. As you can see thanks to the unbuttoned shirt and suggestive danceing this appeals to a older mal audiance.

On the orther hand a simalrity between the two screen shots and the whole video is that britney is allways in focus or at the front. This shows that she is a completly solo and adds to her super star image.

Task seven: Looking back at your preliminary task, what do youfeel you have learnt in the progression from it to full product?

You can see from our screen grabs that in our prelim task we used very basic shots and they were given to us. The story board was very simple and had no interesting shots they were all simple. We did however use a point of view shot. This was our most interesting shot.

With editing we did not know how to use final cut pro or any other effects including after effects, sound effects and transitions, like fade etc. this helped us however gain a basic understanding of how to cut shots into the appropriate places.

In our final task we used a lot more effects, including coloring, transition effects, and sound effects from soundtrack pro. We used shots of a much more complex way like a tracking shot and extreme close ups. This is very different to our prelim task. We spent a lot more time on the editing process and after effects.

With the editing and after effects we used none of this on our prelim task. We were very new to final cut pro so we didn’t use any of the complex assets. in our final task however we used all of the ones we thought were necessary, for example the text tool to explain to the viewers all the necessary points to our film. We used soundtrack pro over the title sequence or a radio.

Judging both of my prelim and final tasks I have seen a big improvement with my final task, this was all down to the time that the group and myself spent on it, adding sounds, coloring and a more sophisticated cut, using more interesting camera angles and a story line.

I really enjoyed doing the final task a lot more than my prelim because the whole process was our own; we could choose our own set, story line and cast etc. we had a much more professional set, using a brick wall room and an electric chair. For our prelim task we only had a room and a table. This made the whole final task process more exiting than the prelim task for me and the rest off the group.

Screen shot of the basic set and camera shots in the prelim task

In our main task we made opening credits and a main title cards, which we did not do in the prelim task.
Screen shots of a mid shot in the prelim task and the main task. You can see the difference between the two shots because of the after effects used in the main task.

We used tracks in our main task. So that we could make more interesting shots.
